MISSION STATEMENT

ADOLESCENT HEALTH ACADEMY 2026

CATCH THEM EARLY, KEEP THEM SAFE

Theme:

NURTURING PREE TEEENS (8-12 years) WITH COMPREHENSIVE HEALTH CARE

Building the Bridge to Healthy Adolescence

Background and Rationale

The preteen period (8-12 years) is often referred to as the "forgotten years." These children are neither viewed as small kids nor as full adolescents. Yet, it is during this time that the foundation for self-esteem, body image, emotional regulation, peer relationships, and early identity formation begins.

This transitional stage marks the onset of puberty, cognitive development, and the emergence of social awareness. However, preteens are increasingly exposed to digital influences, peer pressure, and early mental health challenges without appropriate guidance.

While paediatricians are often the first point of contact, structured training and guidelines for holistic preteen care are limited. Hence, under the aegis of the IAP ADOLESCENT HEALTH ACADEMY, this initiative - Project UTSAH - aims to equip paediatricians and healthcare professionals with knowledge, skills, and sensitivity to promote the overall well-being of preteens across India.

The Project also aims to sensitize the stakeholders, like parents & teachers, about the anticipated physical, sexual & emotional changes and empowering them to handle them effectively, to provide support to the pre-teens, and overcome challenges for a smooth & healthy transition.
